Chapter 46

Henry Johnson went directly from the meeting with Sandstone to see The Leader. Johnson was one of the few people who had direct access to The Leader. Most people who wanted to see The Leader had to apply in writing and provide a justification and detailed agenda. After achieving domination of the Home Planet, The Leader had become a virtual recluse. He controlled his vast empire using technology and a few trusted aides, all from his multi-floor penthouse suite high above the capital city.

Johnson rode the private elevator to the 115th floor of The Leader’s tower and emerged into the vast entrance lobby. As The Leader’s long-time friend and henchman, Johnson was not subject to the usual security checks that other visitors endured. He briskly walked past the receptionist and security guards and entered The Leader’s office.

The room was enormous. The Leader sat behind a huge desk at least fifty feet beyond the entrance doors. Floor to ceiling windows allowed The Leader to survey the entire capital city. Between Johnson and The Leader were a variety of functional spaces. A large rectangular conference table was on the right with fifteen leather chairs, seven on each side and one at the head. Behind the head chair was a beautiful freestanding screen that separated the conference table from a smaller dining area that seated eight around an octagonal table. Three unique seating areas were on the left, separated from each other by two more beautiful freestanding screens. The first had two sofas facing each other with several nearby tables. The second had four high backed leather chairs surrounding a large round table. The third was a control area with two high-backed leather chairs with ottomans, facing a wall of monitors controlled by a panel that sat on a table between the chairs. The entire office was designed so that The Leader did not have to leave it for any reason. A private elevator, hidden behind a bookcase in the left rear corner, was used exclusively by The Leader to take him up several flights to his private living quarters.

Johnson walked briskly across the room toward The Leader’s desk. He was surprised that The Leader rose to greet him, but he realized it was not to greet him but to direct him to the two seats that faced the monitors. The Leader wasn’t much for small talk so, as they were getting seated, he asked, “How was your meeting with Sandstone? Did he agree to the additional weapons and to the new launch date?”

“Not immediately, but he will.”

“Explain.”

“He wasn’t pleased with either change but he clearly understood the implications if he did not agree. With a man like Sandstone, you must let him think he has a choice and then give him all the reasons why he really does not. I gave him two weeks to get back to me with a plan for adding the weapons and a new schedule. He knows that he has no choice but to comply.”

“Sandstone is always a roadblock.
